In the craziness of the morning rush, I paused on my way upstairs to see this. Siblings playing with empty plastic cups and taking obvious pleasure in just being with each other. I stop to take a picture before I get lost in the sameness of routine. As I take a break for lunch, I flip through the pictures on my phone smiling involuntarily as the chubby faces peer back at me from the screen.
It’s been a good nine months. Sometimes I forget what the ‘before’ life was like. From cooing, crawling babies to vociferous drama queens, the transition has been gradual. Yet, as I take pause I realize how much they have grown and we have grown with them.
I make faces and teach them silly sounds and they delightfully oblige. Fingers sticking out of their ears they mimic me. I sing and dance and they follow suit. “Hi Kannamma!” I say and I get a cute “Hi Kamma!” back. I flip dosas on my pan to the babyish “Twinkle Twinkle..” being recited behind me. I turn to see chubby hands twinkling and heads nodding to the tune.
I leave them on their high chairs sippy cups in front of them. They take swigs of the milk and play with the bottles. I turn away for a moment to hear a shrieking match begin. Kay starts and Cee follows suit. Tired of shushing them, I join in. K walks away.
Dinner over, the girls run around the living room as K and I sit down with our plates. One little face appears near the plate. Tearing of a chunky portion of the dosa, I hold it for her to pick. Soon, another head appears. They take turns eating off both our plates. In the few minutes before its time for bed, one lays her head on my thigh. I lean back content. Soon, she is off jostling for space with her sister for a piece of K. He leans forward scooping both of them, reveling in the attention and the love.
Amidst the chores and the studies and the laundry, life happens. And it is good!
