“Let me show you what I made…”

Laddu’s voice trails off as she extends her phone to me. A video, less than a minute long plays. I am impressed with the little one’s editing skills and I say so.

“So, can I have my YT channel please?”

Her eyebrows go up and down as she mock pleads with me.

“Why not?” I quip and turn back to my phone. Half an hour later, I find a message from her on our family group chat with a link to her channel and a note that says “sub to meeeee hehe”

I remind her to turn commenting off and wonder what I have unleashed.

In the past year, I have often thought about putting out video content. I stop for vanity reasons. I hate how I look on camera. My older girls when they were tweens did small TikTok style videos to random dance challenges. Once I encouraged them to do more, they stopped. They limit what they share to their circles and groups I am not part of.

Sitting at my desk this morning, I think I get the generational differences. We are products of our environment. I grew up with zero access to cameras and a strong disapproval of anything that had to do with vanity. I am doing my utmost to unlearn those internalized rules about what is permissible and what is not. My older girls grew up with mini computers in their hands. They also grew up with a mother learning the ropes on how much was too much when it came to internet exposure. I had limits on their devices and I oversaw practically everything that they posted. With the youngest, I seem to be swinging the other way reasoning that this generation is the AI generation and if she is going to be raised by it, why not lean into it.

Let’s see how this works out. So, if you are curious check this channel out.
