This Sunday, Mother’s Day, a two minute micro-documentary Desi Mom chronicling my journey from apolitical woman to politically aware and, active mom will premiere at CAAMFest 2024.This is part of the Our Stories Our Voices initiative by A-Doc (Asian American Documentary Network).
For the 2024 iteration of the initiative, Our Stories, Our Voices, we are calling on filmmakers to capture stories showing how people and communities break through the pull of cynicism and hopelessness around voting to have their voices heard.
The 2024 microdocs series will contain seven 2-minute videos focusing on individual and/or community actions, initiatives, and participation on urgent issues in the 2024 elections. Seven filmmakers will be selected through this open call to create the films, which will be followed by an impact campaign leading up to November, in collaboration with our partner organizations.
…
Working with the filmmakers, the A-Doc team will promote each piece on social media, help curate these projects as part of film festivals, and panels, and ultimately raise the overall visibility of AANHPI voices in the 2024 elections.
I am no stranger to the camera thanks to six years of filming by Chithra Jeyeram for Our Daughters. However, this is the first time I got to see what I thought were random snippets from my life beautifully orchestrated to tell a story. It is still strange to see my face on a poster. It feels weird to look at myself objectively, in third person as a subject telling a story.

I have had over two weeks to watch it, absorb it, remove myself from its immediacy and finally embrace it. I have a lot of thoughts about the process and the separation of the personal from the public image. I am not ready to talk about that mental process yet.
So, if this micro documentary makes it your way in the future, hold space for me.
