Early this morning I woke up in the pre dawn hours to offer prayers to the forces unknown on the occasion of tamizh new year. Focussing my concentration on the twin lamps that lit up the tiny area, I reflected on the short but momentous journey to parenthood. You see, today was finalization day. A day when the legal system recognized K and I as natural parents of Kay and Cee.
As we rushed through the morning getting ready for court, thoughts swirled in my head. They ranged from immediate concerns of what to pack in the diaper bag to what that piece of paper called the adoption decree signified. From what to wear to court to if my feelings towards the girls will change in some way because of the legal sanction?
In many ways it is like the marriage certificate. The rituals are fine and dandy but that piece of paper that states K and I are man and wife is a tangible representation of our relationship. Much like that as I took the seat in court today and testified to accept Kay and Cee as my natural children there was something solid and reassuring about the Judge’s sonorous voice pronouncing us family.
With today we reach the end of the road in the adoption process. Our dealings with the agency, the social workers and other adoption related professionals are hopefully done. Yes, there are loose ends to tie but the onus is on us. From today on, we set out on a different journey, navigating the challenges of parenthood.
While I mark today as the end of one momentous journey and the beginning of another, here’s wishing all of you a Happy New Year!
