The Rise of Ning runs forty episodes and almost never sags. That alone makes it rare.

It disavows the usual palace intrigue preferring to focus instead on the complicated relationships within the Luo family. Over the 40 episodes, we glean insights into sibling rivalry, parent child dynamics and, obviously the cat and mouse game between the male protagonist Luo Shen Yuan and the antagonist Lu Jia Xue played ably by Ci Sha
What is refreshing about this series is that it rarely sags. The pacing is excellent, smattering the entire show with different conflicts that rear its head at opportune moments keeping the tension taut and the viewer hooked. The interspersion of wily planning and strategy with lighter family and romantic moments is done well.
If there was anything I had to nitpick, it would be the female protagonists voice for me.
