The Red Sleeve: A Review

The Red Sleeve is among the finest sageuk I have watched. I do not say that lightly. I have worked my way through a fair number of them by now.

Poster for the kdrama The Red Sleeve

At its center is a love between a king and a court woman. But, ultimately it is a commentary on agency. Who has agency in their lives?

She has duties, a body the palace believes it owns, a heart she guards on her own terms. The drama lets her want both the man and her own life, and never lets her forget the cost these choices come with.

For a historical, it carries a surprising feminism. Power and responsibility and agency are not abstractions here. You watch the protagonists wrestle with these choices every day.

The casting is faultless. The pacing holds. The making is careful in the tiny details, the glance held a beat too long, the sleeve that gives the show its name.

I came for the romance. I stayed for the woman who would not be only that.

If this moved you, send a tip.
