Reborn: A Review

Reborn opens like a school romance and slowly turns into something else.

Poster for cdrama Reborn

Reborn starring Zhou Yiran and Zhang Jing Yi boasts an impeccable cast. The twenty three episode series starts hinting at a school romance type show but ends up being a slow unraveling. It is a slice of life/coming of age drama set in the early 2000s.

This is not a binge watch. This is best consumed a little daily permitting you to understand why people are the way they are. The writer wants you to scream at the screen whilst also grudgingly earning your empathy for even the most flawed of characters.

The leads are flawlessly cast, essaying the teen rebellion, the growing realization that perhaps things are not what they seem to be and the eventual capitulation to life itself.

The tension is understated and the happy ending arrives in its sweet time but as viewers we know the kids have won at life already.
