A couple of weeks ago, a friend messaged me saying “you have to check this out…” with a link to a subscription service for books. An hour later, another friend tagged me on a Facebook post stating something similar. I bookmarked the link and told myself I would check it out soon. Before I could get to it, yet another friend messaged me on WhatsApp along with a contact for Nalini Haridas the founder of The Burrow – Online Library of Books by Indian Authors.
So, taking it as a sign that I had to reach out to her, I did. Nalini and I met for brunch a week ago. We spent over two hours discussing books, the immigrant life, women in STEM and, parenting. Like me, she grew up on a diet of books by British and American authors and as an adult and an immigrant parent found this gap where her kids were not exposed to writing by Indian authors. Her kids are now grown and flown and she has decided to take that leap of faith and try and bridge the gap.

So, if you are part of the Indian diaspora or you are raising kids (ages 0 – 11) of Indian heritage, check out The Burrow. Nalini personally curates the collection of books she has on offer. It is a great way to try new authors and keep up with voracious readers without having to clutter your home with books your kids read once and never touch again.
I am personally vested in seeing this idea take flight and making it mainstream. So, here is my request, hop on over to this website and sign up if you have kids in the family who will benefit. If not, if you can think of people in your network who can benefit, do share the link with them.
The Burrow also has a presence on Instagram and on Facebook.
The holiday season is a great time to make a gift of a book subscription to the littles in your life.
