The Indian Book Club sent me fifteen questions about Why Is My Skin Brown?, and answering them turned into one of the more honest conversations I have had about this book.
We talked about growing up the darker cousin. About my paati’s backhanded compliments and how a child feels the sting long before she has the words. About Sarayu and Viveka, and how cousin-sisterhood survives the comparisons adults impose on it. About why I leave my books open-ended: as a parent of teenagers, I would rather hold a question than give an answer I am unsure of.
They also asked about my reading life, which is how I ended up recommending Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 for the hundredth time. No regrets!
