Year In Review

As 2015 draws to a close, I set time aside for my annual ritual. I scan each month starting with January and realize it has been an eventful year. The brutal cold, mountains of snow and being stuck at home marked the beginning of the year. With the spring thaw came birthdays, dresses, yard work and milder weather. Ammu and Pattu left their old school with uniforms and longer days for the unfettered freedom of the summer. Saathi left me behind for three weeks as he cared for his dad while I understood what it was like to be a single parent albeit for a very short while. The end of summer brought with it realization of new dreams.

The kids started at the new school. I started with baby steps toward a lifelong dream, writing. I found a way to post on The Huffington Post, focussed my energies on pushing out 10 pages or more for each workshop at my school. Laddu grew taller, hit milestones with alarming speed and blossomed before my very eyes into a mini adult. November came and with it NaNoWriMo. I pushed out the first draft of my novel. December saw me dither when it came to editing and rewriting. I decided to give myself a break and binge read works by other authors of Indian descent.

2015 also has been a year when I devoured books, Each night, I sat up late at night reading. The choices were eclectic. I concentrated this time around on structure, plot devices, language and pacing. I read a lot of non-fiction as it related to writing. I received feedback that reinforced my desire to write and at the same time decimated my confidence.

As I wrap the year up with a milestone birthday, I realize that all of this year can be summed up by one word.

Dreams that came true and dreams that seem unattainable now. As I pursue them, I want to wish you and yours a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a very Happy New Year!

  1. Books is happiness. I also love summing up the year but it’s hard for me to go as crisp as you did 😉 Planning to publish a long post on 31st!
Happy new year!! Happy holidays 🙂
