Initial impressions

At 5:00 PM Wednesday evening my stomach was in knots. I walked past the door to the university a couple of times scoping the place out and checking to see if anyone was in early. The smell of mayonnaise hit my nose. We were supposed to show up at 5:30 PM for our Orientation. I was too excited to work.

As I showed up nervous and smiling to cover the nerves I saw the room almost full. All smartly dressed people eating in silence. I ran into the admissions director and he showed me where to dump my bag before I could grab a bite to eat. Plate loaded with some pasta salad and a tiny piece of chocolate brownie, I found an empty seat and lowered myself in it. Next to me was a very smart looking lady in a bright blue dressy suit. I turned over and introduced myself to her and the gentleman on my other side and went back to my plate. As I looked around I saw people trying to make conversation with their neighbours. It was a very interesting experience. It has been a long, long time since I have been in a bunch of totally new people all trying to size each other up. I looked with frank curiosity and took in all the snatches of conversation around. The evening went past in a flurry of activity and information. Loaded with a laptop bag and other goodies I got home to K and went to bed dreaming of class.

Today was a whole lot of fun. We spent the morning in team building exercises. My team was a nice set of people. One other girl and three other guys. They all seemed friendly and we did OK as a team. The afternoon and evening had us work very seriously on a simulation running a new company and plotting its success over the first four years of its growth. Time flew and before I knew it the clock showed 7:00 PM.

I chattered non-stop on the way home filling K in with the details of my day. Before I started on the assignment for tomorrow I figured I’d put up a diary entry here. πŸ™‚

  1. I am doubly excited for you after reading this post. It’s almost like realising my own unfulfilled dreams.
when I was visiting SanFrancisco for work few years back, I went to Stanford university campus Palo Alto. I cried like a little girl. This happens everytime I pass a university campus here too. The facilities/resources and access to information is no comparison to the university I studied my engg. Laksh! you have an opportunity to make it really big, and you are immensely talented. All the very best.
one question; are you doing full time?

  2. It’s nice Laksh to hear the excitement in your voice – I guess that excitement we feel when we first go to kindergarten never leaves us everytime we enter a new place of learning πŸ™‚

All the best and keep being happy always πŸ™‚

  3. Laksh,

  7. Laksh-

Looks like you had a typical first day in class. So, you still haven’t said if this is an MS or MBA program. From your description of team building etc. seems like an MBA program to me.
